Ryan Floyd of Racing With Floyd

Hi, I'm
Ryan Floyd

I'm a pinewood derby enthusiast based in Herriman, Utah, with a passion for bringing the thrill of race day to groups of all kinds — from Cub Scout packs to school classrooms to community events.

What started as a hobby grew into something I truly love sharing. I built my own 3-lane, 32-foot track and developed a full digital race management system so every event runs smoothly, fairly, and with maximum excitement for the racers and the crowd.

Whether it's your first derby or your hundredth, I handle all the technology so you can focus on what matters — having a great time.

Everything You Need
For Race Day

I bring the track, the technology, and the excitement — you just bring the cars and the racers.

⚡
Digital Timing System
Electronic finish line sensors with precision timing to the ten-thousandth of a second. No disputes, no guessing, just results.
🏆
Awards & Trophies
Optional Add-on
A one-by-one awards reveal, printed certificates for every racer, and a full results page for your group. Trophy packages available for your top finishers.

Everyone's In
On The Action

Race day isn't just for the kids at the starting line. Parents, siblings, and grandparents can follow every heat from their seats and cheer for their racer.

📱
Live on your phone
Scan & Follow Along
Families scan a QR code at the door to open a live results page on their phone. They can see each heat as it finishes, the full standings, and every racer's times. It runs on my own private Wi-Fi, so the venue doesn't need internet.
⭐
Follow your racer
Star Your Racer
Tap the star next to your racer's name and their next heat stays on your screen, so you're ready with the camera when their car comes down the track.
📺
On the big screen
Up Next & On Deck
As families arrive, a welcome screen shows who's checked in and counts down to the start. During racing, the big screen calls out the next three cars and the three after them, so racers know when to head to the track.
⚡
Every heat counts
Track Records
Every time comes with a real-world scale speed. When a car sets the fastest time of the night or breaks the all-time track record, the screen flashes and the crowd gets to cheer.
🏆
No spoilers
Awards Reveal
Final standings are revealed one racer at a time, counting up to the podium. Phones follow along, so nobody sees the winner early. There's also an optional 🐢 Safest Driver award for the slowest car that finished every heat cleanly.
🏁
After the race
Fun Runs
Once the awards are done, kids can line up against their friends for just-for-fun races. Fun runs never change the official results. They just keep the track busy until it's time to pack up.

Try The Parent
View Right Now

This is the same page families open on their phones at a race, running a pretend race on a loop. Tap around: it's live.

  • 🏁
Live tab: watch each heat load at the gate, then see the times land the moment cars cross the line.
  • 🏆
Standings tab: rankings update after every heat, then the awards reveal counts down to the podium.
  • ⭐
Racers tab: star a racer to keep their next heat and times pinned at the top.

Demo racers and cars are made up. At a real event this runs on my private race-day Wi-Fi, so the venue doesn't need internet.

The Times
To Beat

Every heat is timed to the ten-thousandth of a second. Here's what's been done on the track so far.

What To Expect

Here's how a typical race day unfolds from start to finish.

45–60 min before
Setup & Tech Check
I arrive early to set up the 32-foot track, test the finish-line sensors on all three lanes, and set up the private Wi-Fi for parents' phones, the welcome screen, and the signs. Everything is race-ready before your first guest walks in.
Event start
Check-In, Weigh-In & Scan In
Racers check in at the race table, weigh their car, and get their car number. Meanwhile, families scan the QR code to follow along on their phones, and the welcome screen shows who's checked in and counts down to the start. Cars that don't meet the rules can still race just for fun.
20–60 min
Racing Begins
Each race is customized to your liking — from heats per car to lane rotation and how racers are ranked. Times are captured digitally to the ten-thousandth of a second, and the big screen calls out which racers are up next and on deck.
Throughout
Live Leaderboard & Excitement
Standings update after every heat, on the big screen and on every parent's phone. Families can star their racer to see when they race next, and the crowd gets a flash when a race or track record falls. After each heat, racers grab their car and bring it back up to the race table.
Final heat
Awards Reveal
Standings are revealed one racer at a time, counting up to 3rd, 2nd, and 1st on the podium. Phones follow along with no spoilers. Certificates for every racer can be printed and ready to hand out. Trophies are an add-on and can be customized in advance.
After
Fun Runs, Teardown & Results
Kids can keep racing their friends in just-for-fun runs while you wrap up with your group, then I handle all the teardown. Your leader gets a results page with full standings, every heat time, and top 3 by den or group, and results are posted here on the website within 24 hours.

Common Questions

Don't see your question? Reach out and I'll get back to you quickly.

Ask a Question
The system handles any group size comfortably. Most events run between 15 and 40 racers, with larger events of 40 or more also welcome. For bigger groups, I adjust the heat schedule and rotation to keep things moving at a good pace.
Yes — participants build and bring their own pinewood derby cars. I provide the track, timing system, and race management. If you need car kits, your local Scout shop, hobby store, or Amazon carries standard BSA kits.
Standard BSA rules apply unless your organization has its own: maximum weight 5 oz, maximum length 7", maximum width 2¾", maximum height 3", minimum ground clearance ⅜". I can send you a full guidelines sheet when you book.
I'm based in Herriman and regularly serve the greater Salt Lake and Utah County area — including South Jordan, Riverton, Draper, Sandy, Lehi, and surrounding communities. Events beyond 30 miles may have a small travel fee.
A typical event with 20–40 racers runs about 2 hours including check-in and awards. Larger groups may need 2.5–3 hours. I arrive 45–60 minutes early for setup and stay to handle teardown after.
Trophies and awards are not included by default, but I can help coordinate them as an add-on. Many groups also prefer to source their own awards to match their theme or budget.
Yes! I bring my own private Wi-Fi network. Parents join it and scan a QR code posted at the door and on the tables, which opens a live results page with each heat, the standings, and every racer's times. They can star their racer to see when they're up next. The page is view-only, and the venue doesn't need internet.
Nobody gets sent home. A car that's over the weight limit can still race as a "fun" racer. It runs every heat with everyone else and gets a certificate, but doesn't take an official place. How strict to be is your group's call, and I'll set it up the way you like.
Just a flat indoor space at least 40 feet long (to accommodate the track plus setup room), a standard power outlet, and a table for check-in and weigh-in. I take care of everything else.
